PROFILE
SHORT BIOGRAPHY
Dr. Md. Rasel Hossen was born and grew up in Kushtia- also known as the capital of the culture of Bangladesh. He is currently working as a Lecturer at the Department of Physics, Jahangirnagar University, Bangladesh. He earned his PhD at the Sydney Institute for Astronomy, part of the School of Physics at the University of Sydney, Australia in 2022. He was awarded a very competitive Australian Government Research Training Program Scholarship to support himself through his PhD program. His PhD research focuses on gravitational lensing, the deflection of light by massive objects, by considering three-dimensional ray-tracing through the numerical application of Einstein’s general relativistic geodesic equations. He has developed a three-dimensional ray-tracing algorithm and a Doppler lensing algorithm in the computer language Python to study the underlying matter mass distribution of the large-scale structure of the universe by utilizing a relativistic cosmological simulation. In recognition of his outstanding contribution to research (for unlocking challenging problems in astrophysics) and publications during his PhD, he has been awarded the "Faculty of Science Postgraduate Research Prize for Outstanding Academic Achievement". He has also been awarded the "Faculty of Science Prize for Outstanding PhD Thesis" for the novelty and outcome of his PhD thesis, as well as for receiving excellent reports (remarks as excellent) from examiners (accepted his PhD thesis as is, without any corrections), from The University of Sydney, Australia.
Before his PhD, he completed his M.S. (2013) and B.Sc. (2012) degrees in Physics from Jahangirnagar University, Bangladesh. He has obtained a GPA of 3.98 (out of 4.00) in M.S. and a CGPA of 3.71 (out of 4.00) in B.Sc. He has initiated his M.S. research under the supervision of Dr. A. A. Mamun, Professor, Department of Physics, Jahangirnagar University. Since starting his research on Astrophysical Plasma Physics, he has studied different nonlinear phenomena of degenerate plasmas as well as complex (dusty) plasmas. To do that – he had to analyze the numerical datasets and investigate the properties of electroacoustic waves for different plasma systems. He has been awarded the "National Science and Technology (NST) Fellowship (2013–2014)" by the Ministry of Science and Technology (Bangladesh) during his M.S. research work. After completing his M.S. degree, he started his career as a Lecturer in Physics at Daffodil International University (DIU), Bangladesh, in January 2015, and was then promoted to Senior Lecturer at the same institution. He was continuing his research work along with his other official activities (e.g., conducting classes, counselling students, conducting evaluations, etc.). In recognition of his past accomplishments in research and teaching, he has been awarded the "Vice Chancellor’s Award for Contribution in Research-2016" by the top authorities of DIU, Bangladesh. He has also been awarded the "Scholarly Publication in Reputed Indexed (ISI/Scopus) Journals-2017" for his contributions to quality research publications from the topmost authority of DIU.
Many of his research outcomes have received international recognition, and more than forty of his research works have been published in different peer-reviewed International Journals along with 903 citations (h-index: 21 and i10-index: 29), as viewed through Google Scholar. Recognizing his scientific excellence, he has participated as the regular reviewer of many prestigious international journals and has been appointed as the Editorial Board Member of the "Expert Opinion on Astronomy and Astrophysics" journal published by WHIOCE, Singapore, since 2018. Dr. Md. Rasel Hossen led the Astrophysics and Cosmology Research Group at the Department of Physics, Jahangirnagar University, Bangladesh, and is an active member of the Plasma Physics Research Group at the Department of Physics, Jahangirnagar University, Bangladesh.
